21st March to 31st March 1945
MARCH 1945
Wednesday 21st
Up on 8.40. An exiting day. No lecture as some soc. studies people who come to it had an exam. Did a bit of work in the morning - finished essay at last. Then had lunch with the other and wandered a bit. Left another stocking to be repaired. Met Janet and she took me to the House of Commons - she has got to know the usher there and so gets in fairly easily. Not a very exciting session - but the P.M. came in at the end of question time to answer a special question by his son - quite an amusing time was heard for a few minutes. Felt very queer being there at last - like a rather drab and very amateur debating soc - interesting to consider what its really for and how much good those doddering old dears manage to do. Met D. afterwards - oh yes, J and I had tea and very nice cream cake there - and had coffee and sandwich at a Moo-Cow in Leicester Sq. and then queued for gallery of Wyndham to see the 'Years Between' - very comfortable there and had the front row centre. A problematic sort of thing by Daphne du Maurier about a man returning from Europe after years of being in hiding there. Rather cynical, but interesting, very good acting In on 9.24 and wolfed an enormous supper.
Thursday 22nd
Had to get 8.10 and 3 hours lectures - nearly wore us all out - terrible after 2 days off. Lunch in college then along to a meeting of political society. Very poor - hardly anyone there - they are going to try and really get it going next term soon. Then along to a philosophy seminar - but Dr. Saw had lost my essay so had to sit half asleep for nearly an hour, while three others got theirs back. Down on 3.24 - read a bit - then slept. Terribly warm and could hardly get along on bike. Tea ad then did packing. D. in about an hour later. Supper, a game of pit and then listen to wireless. D. Had to go round to Dunnies to see if Brian could go to the theatre with them next week. Bath and bed soon after 10. Sure to have forgotten to pack something - got one case strapped up and a parcel to send of tomorrow. Sent a card off home about times of arrival on Saturday.
Friday 23rd
Up on early train and finished sketch of events of Aunties for the college magazine. A lecture and then out to post a parcel - and back to do a bit of reading, two more lectures, the last for the term thank goodness, lunch in college, then D. came with me to have my polyphotos done, she had her done in the morning. Went to Duchess theatre for her to get some tickets and ten walked over Waterloo bridge - glorious sunshine. Had tea in Regent Street at a Quality inn. A super omelette followed by a waffle with ice cream. Then round to St. James Theatre, met Christine and Mary M. and saw Emma. A very good production, well produced - thought Anna Neagle made Emma little too silly, not quite satirical enough. Back on 9.24.
Saturday 24th
Up about 8. Finished off packing and D and O came down to bus with me. Went into Reading on the bus and just in time for 10.40 to Hereford. Read and little bit but slept most of the time when not eating lunch. Had to wait over an hour at Hereford and arrived Ludlow 5.15, with Mummy there to meet me. Talked all evening.
Sunday 25th
Went to church this morning. Sara seems a pretty good man - has certainly filled the church. Then round to Granny. Auntie Edith, Uncle Dick etc. have moved to Polchester, fairly near Birmingham. Spent quiet rest of day and read most of time. Wandered around garden a bit. Then a walk round castle with N and Mummy.
Monday 26th
Up about 9.30 - down to coffee with Mummy and Daddy and then saw Hodge. Got emergency card and mucked about shop. Spent rest of day at home, playing with cats, playing piano, and reading. Mummy came in in evening having just met Mr. Day who says they have heard Lucy is seriously ill, may have diphtheria - do hope she will be all right.
Tuesday 27th
Another quiet sort of day. Spent morning gardening - weeding wall rockery - with help of Woolly - boys. Read all afternoon. Then took Pickles down to vet, to have his paw attended to - he has sprained his knee, and has to have it bound up with antipathetic on it. Mummy met me and helped me home with him as his basket is very heavy. Wrote to D. - had fire in drawing room so did quite a bit of playing.
Wednesday 28th
Mucked about - then down to see Mrs. Day and ask how Lucy was. They don't think its actually diphtheria, on if it is its only a mild form. Will have to send her some magazines etc. Coffee with Mummy and Daddy, then went to see if Snows would be home soon and to my surprise found Pat already there. Georgie comes tomorrow. Mucked around trying things on in shop. Read all afternoon. Read all afternoon and then played a bit on piano. Mrs. Day and Mr. came in evening. Wrote to Lucy.
Thursday 29th
Down with Mummy to shop but not needed much. Sent a parcel of books off to Lucy. Had coffee with Mummy and then with Pat. Went and made an appointment for hair a week tomorrow at 11. In afternoon went for a drive and took Nana through Leominster etc. How lovely if we had our own car. Haven’t quite forgotten how, though I did nearly lift a man of the road by the seat of his pants in Tower Street. Then in evening went with Daddy to church to preparation service for communion on Sunday. Dr. Sew sent my essay with she must have found. To my amazement it had A – on it – never thought I find a mark like that on my work again.
Friday 30th
Good Friday. Mucky wet day so stayed in bed part of morning reading. In afternoon went walk with Snows and Janet – I think Georgie is getting a bit thinner. In evening read and listened to wireless and did a bit of playing.
Saturday 31st
Down to shop all day to help Mummy as Miss Haynes away – very busy. Had coffee with the gang. N’ (Nana) came down in the afternoon. Had bath and read in evening. Then listened to the ‘Housemaster’ on the wireless.
